Check Your HEPA Vacuum Cleaner’s HEPA Certification.
HEPA Cleaners are the best vacuum cleaners for filtering out very small particles from the air returned to your room, air which may contain allergens.
HEPA Vacuum Cleaners have HEPA filters which are prevent even the tiniest particles of dust from returning to the room. Other Vacuum cleaners of course have filters but they may not stop allergens from re-entering the room with the return airflow.
HEPA stands for "high efficiency particulate air". This type of filter normally absorbs large amount of very fine dirt and avoids re circulation of even tiny particles of dirt back into the air within the room. HEPA Cleaners have filters which normally come in one of two varieties.
True or Absolute HEPA Filters
HEPA standards require that a filter must remove 99.7% of dust particles .3 microns or larger. Only Filters which have been tested to this high standard can be certified as True HEPA. You should only consider buying a HEPA Vacuum Cleaner which has a certified HEPA filter. You can tell if the filter has been certified by looking for the certificate which will show the test results and should be attached to the filter.
HEPA Type Filters
HEPA Type filters are very similar to True HEPA filters and are made like them as well. They could bear a lot of resemblance to each other and can be difficult to tell apart. The only difference is the certification.
HEPA types do not have to meet the filter standards of True HEPA. Typically these filters only absorb 85 - 90 percent of particles and when the size of the particle is less than 1 micron, this percentage drops further. HEPA Vacuum Cleaners of this type are often not much better than your average non HEPA Vacuum Cleaners.
Differentiation
To identify a true HEPA filter, always look at the test results and the serial number on the filter. The testing standard is always for a particle size of .3 microns and true HEPA filter should be greater than 99.97 percent absorption for particle of this size. Always look for this type when looking at HEPA Vacuum Cleaners
Advantages of HEPA filter
HEPA filters are very useful for people with allergies. The filter removes virtually all allergens from the air and makes the air very clean. This however should only be required if there is a real need, for example if someone is highly allergic. Since the cost is high it is only if someone really needs that kind of high level filtration is it worth spending the extra money.
Be sure and look for certification and examine the test results if you decide to buy a HEPA Vacuum cleaner.
